An Invitation to Rest

Updated: Jul 13, 2022

You have an invitation sitting on your desk.

It is likely unopened for in the busy chatter and bustling to-do lists of the days, it has sat, forgotten on your desk. 😬

Open it, it is from your friend. It says this:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” 1

Come to Him. Do not run to another… even to a brother… come to Him. ☝🏼

Think of yourself bursting home through the side/garage door (because who really comes through their own front door on a regular basis anyway?), you have SO MUCH TO SAY, and tell your Friend.

The words come tumbling out all jumbled and messy, but He is not there to judge your every syllable and correct you…

He hears you. He listens.

Your words turn to tears because of all the frustrations and you feel misunderstood.😩

You are too upset to be fancy and calculated in your communication, you just say it all. 😡

It all feels heavy 😞... but as you tell Him (the One who breathed the stars into being) the weight lessens and you feel… sleepy? Yes, sleepy.

You didn't realize it until that moment that underneath all the painful feelings of annoyance, anger and fear you were really tired. 😓

Now having given all your concerns to the One who can actually preside as King over everything that concerns you, you need not fight it alone anymore and so you cuddle up, lean your head on His chest and rest. ✨

The steady rhythm of His heart beating soon lulls you into a peaceful sleep, knowing that everything really will be OK after all.

As you rest there, listening to His heart beating… steady… strong… unwavering, it begins to affect you.

Suddenly that heartbeat is the rhythm to which you live your days and even direct your own emotions and desires. 💓

Instead of being ruled by the lusts of the flesh: greed, anger, selfishness and pride, His Word becomes a light to your feet and even when it seems contradictory, His Spirit within you whispers “this is the Way, walk in it.” 2

🗣You find yourself preaching to your own soul: “Why are you downcast O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God! For I will yet praise Him!” 3

This is not like the old you.

The old you was tossed to and fro by every wave of accusation and the praise of people… this new you seems to be steady … like that beautiful heartbeat. 4

❤️‍🔥That steady, strong, faithful heartbeat that you now take time to listen to every morning and evening.

Over the days and years, still there are days when the door is flung open and a flurry of words and emotion overflow, but more often than not, when you come in to that secret place, you know you’re home and you love to just sit and be with your Lover, your Friend, to know and be known. To ask questions and to listen to Him as He shares His heart, desires and the things that pain Him.

Will you open that invitation? An invitation to Abide? 💌

🌿“ Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” 5

Abiding in the vine,
